Event Description

Dr. Joan Roughgarden brings theoretical ecology and evolution to New College! Dr. Roughgarden will present “Evolution of Reproductive Social Behavior: Theories, Old and New” on November 13 at 3:30 pm in the Mildred Sainer Pavilion.
Dr. Roughgarden is a Professor of Biological Sciences and Geophysics at Stanford University, where she has taught since 1972. Dr. Roughgarden received a BS in Biology and an AB in Philosophy from University of Rochester and an MS and PhD in Biology from Harvard. She has published 5 books, including Evolution’s Rainbow: Diversity, Gender and Sexuality in Nature and People (2004) and The Genial Gene: Deconstructing Darwinian Selfishness (2009) and over 120 articles.

Dr. Roughgarden’s visit is a part of a collaborative effort between the Gender Studies Program, Environmental Initiatives, the Marine Sciences Outreach Program and the New College Foundation to foreground Women in/and Science.

There will be a book signing at the conclusion of the lecture.
