Event Description

"Networks of Plunder: The International Antiquities Trade."

Morag Kersel
Assistant Professor Anthropology, DePaul University
College Hall, 4:00 pm

Archaeologist Morag Kersel studied the international antiquities trade while earning her Ph.D. from Cambridge University. She has emerged as a world figure in the effort to protect and preserve the past. Prior to her current appointment as Assistant Professor Anthropology at DePaul University, Dr. Kersel managed the congressionally funded Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation to help less-developed countries protect their cultural heritage. Dr. Kersel will speak on the growing trade in antiquities, how it has been affected by civil breakdown in Iraq and Afghanistan, and what is being done to curtail it. Co-sponsored by the New College Public Archaeology Laboratory.

New Topics is a collaboration of the New College Foundation and New College of Florida. This dynamic community series pairs prominent national speakers with New College faculty for stimulating discussions on relevant topics of our time. A reception follows each program and provides an opportunity to meet the speakers, students and faculty. Media sponsors are the Herald-Tribune Media Group and WEDU.

The 2010-2011 series consists of six programs at the new start time of 4 pm. All but one of the events will be held at Mildred Sainer Pavilion, 5313 Bay Shore Road; the April event is at College Hall, 315 College Drive. The series price is $75; single events $15. All events are free for the New College community.
