STAGED READING
This performance of QUEER will be a staged reading of a film by Steve Buscemi from a script by Oren Moverman, based on the novel by William S. Burroughs.
QUEER is a story of romantic possessions and artistic obsessions as explored through the notorious Mexico City episode in the life and times of the Beat Generation's grand hipster, William Seaward Burroughs. It's 1950 and Burroughs (a.k.a. Bill Lee) keeps company with an eccentric group of American expatriates in the murder capital of the world, posing as students and experimenting with drugs, alcohol, freedom of mind and sexuality. Coming off a junk addiction with an insatiable, reawakened sexual appetite and a need to be away from his telepathic soul mate wife Jane, Lee sets his sights on the young and attractive Allerton, whom he seduces with his "Routines" - entertaining but bizarre soliloquies chronicles Lee's unpredictable and emotional relationship with Allerton, their relentless search for a telepathic Native American drug yage, and Lee's struggles as the father of two and husband of an emotionally fragile, fiercely intelligent woman, ending in the famous William Tell routine that leaves Jane dead and Lee a literary outlaw. QUEER is Lee's/Burroughs's journey from bar room gadfly and mind tripping raconteur to one of the most influential (and shoplifted) writers of the 20th century.
