Event Description

New College of Florida and the Young Professionals for International Cooperation are hosting “United Nations Day” on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010, from 9 am to 3 pm in the Sudakoff Center at New College. Students from area colleges and high schools as well as young professionals are invited to participate to learn about a variety of career possibilities in the global market. Presenters have experience at the United Nations, U.S. State Department, World Bank and multicultural media outlets. The cost is $10 for students (includes LUNCH and UNA/YPIC membership).

The Sudakoff Center is located at 5845 General Dougher Place, Sarasota, Florida 34243. From U.S. 41, turn east at the stoplight onto Gen. Spaatz Boulevard, just north of University Parkway. Turn right onto Gen. Dougher Place. Parking is free but limited; carpooling is recommended.

Seminar Speakers:

A. Edward Elmendorf—Elmendorf began his international career in the Foreign Service at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations under former Ambassador Adlai Stevenson. In his 30 years at the World Bank, Elmendorf focused on policy planning, loan programming and project development with African countries. He was also involved in personnel management, country assistance strategy and lending and macroeconomic policy in Ethiopia, Somalia and Sudan as well as in Indian Ocean countries. Elmendorf currently serves as the president and CEO of UNA-USA.

John Ericson—At the U.N. Secretariat in New York, Ericson currently serves as the chief of the outreach unit in the Office of Human Resources Management. Ericson began at the United Nations in Austria and later spent five years at the U.N. Economic Commission for Africa in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He served in peacekeeping operations in the former Yugoslavia and Cambodia and has worked in Kenya and Bangkok, Thailand.

Jeffry Olesen—With more than 20 years in the Foreign Service, Olesen has served as Minister-Counselor for Management Affairs for the three U.S. Missions in Vienna, Austria, and the U.S. Mission to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. In addition to two tours at the State Department in Washington, D.C., he served overseas in Athens, Greece; Almaty, Kazakhstan; Budapest, Hungary; Lahore, Pakistan; Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates; and Guadalajara, Mexico. Olesen is currently the U.S. Department of State Diplomat in Residence at Florida International University and Miami-Dade College.

Kent Kirchner—As CEO of Media Maquiladora, an integrated marketing services group focused on U.S. Hispanic and Latin American audiences, Kirchner has launched the fastest growing and largest media network in the U.S. Hispanic marketplace. Previously, Kirchner worked as business development director for a leading social media technology developer whose clients included Kodak, American Express, ABC, CBS, CNN and Reebok.

Christina Snell—A business technology and marketing consultant, Snell has worked with MIT and the Harvard Business School as well as Global 300 and Fortune 30 companies. In her role as education director for UNA-USA in Tampa, Snell speaks to students and young adults on methods of researching various cultures and incorporating international coursework and business components in their curriculum.
