Information is power and misinformation is power! How do we know who and what to believe? Do we believe our leaders who we empower to protect us? Do we believe our mega-corportions whom we support with our buying power? Do we believe those who market to us for our dollars. Do we believe scientists who should have no conflicts of interest? Do we believe in religious leaders who convince us that there are no other valid beliefs? Are we even interested in finding the truth? My feeling is that the majority of people are not interested, because finding the truth generates responsibility. Most of us don't really trust anyone but we feel we have no power to make sure that the truth be presented. We settle for the least offensive. An example is this healthcare reform controversy. Who is telling the truth? Is it the progressive democrats? The conservative republicans? Or those in between?
Each one of these groups twists things so we follow them and their agenda. There are commercials, political town hall meetings, grassroot organizations pushing their positions. There lobbyists with huge expense accounts, there are our elected representatives who are more influenced by the lobbyist than by us who elected them. There are corporations who want their profits and didvidends. And there's us -- the consumers of healthcare. What's missing is well-informed, fearless and activist consumers. We need consumers who are not swayed by those who have their political or corporate agendas, but consumers who see the results of these greedy agendas and stand up against them. WE have the power of the purse, but this most important power is not exercised, mostly out of fear, to effect real change in a very broken system based on greed. A lot of times I find myself saying we deserve what we get and we have no right to complain. Then I see very sick people who have no insurance, or have very high deductibles they can't afford, who get rejected for any little thing called a "pre-existing condition", who lose their homes and their quality of life because of the costs of healthcare and I know I need to fight for them and of those who will come to this in the future.
