A GOOD YARN OPENS IN SARASOTA
STORE COMMITS TO GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY
…A Good Yarn, the store featuring materials for knitting and crocheting for everyone from beginners to experts, has opened at 7668 South Tamiami Trail in Sarasota. The store is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm and on Thursday 10 am to 6 pm. Each Thursday from 6 pm to 8 pm is “Group Therapy,” a casual gathering of knitters who share their work and ideas and help each other out. There’s also a wide selection of classes, trunk shows and events in a comfortable and relaxed setting. The class schedule is posted on the web site at www.AGoodYarnSarasota.com.
Additionally, A Good Yarn organized a charity knitters group that meets every Saturday at 1 pm to create items that will benefit non-profits. During the month of October, Breast Cancer awareness month, the knitters are making beautiful scarves and hats for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. They are also creating “premie” baby caps and blankets for the All Children’s Hospital Guild.
“I wanted to create a shop that provides excellent personal attention, outstanding pattern selection and a spectrum of choices of fibers,” says owner Susan Post. “It’s about selection, support and atmosphere.”
A grand opening celebration is scheduled for November 14 from 10 until 4. The guest of honor is Barbara G. Walker, a celebrated knitting genius who developed mosaic knitting along with many other techniques. She is also the best-selling author of several volumes of The Treasure of Knitting series. She will host a live internet chat from 2-3 pm at the event.
The grand opening will also include a demonstration by Cliff Haack from Skacel Yarns in Seattle. He will be demonstrating the Artfelt process as well as teaching a class on how to make a hat in one hour. There will be door prizes and refreshments throughout the day.
The store carries a wide variety of yarns, many from independent companies in the United States. Susan Post even attended the Sheep and Wool Festival in New York to find local spinners and dyers. Some of the lines the store carries are Blue Sky Alpacas, Rowan, Classic Elite, Pagewood Farms, Madeline Tosh, Brown Sheep, Louet, Three Irish Girls and Manos del Uruguay.
