A Prayer For the Times -- Uplifting Arizona and the World

In a world of instant communications where anyone has a forum, every word uttered, every idea suggested, and every action has consequences. Seen or unseen, energetic waves generated by all these words, ideas, and actions roll through our collective consciousness, reaching like-minded individuals that, in a world of duality, are acted upon for good or evil.

The weekend tragedy in Arizona where six were killed and a US Congresswoman gravely injured, speaks volumes about the deterioration in our national discourse.  Civility has been replaced with coarse, rude and vitriolic tirades.  In a country priding itself on free speech, television "news" shows allow character assassinations or wild accusations with no one held accountable for truthfulness or the consequences of their words.

And yet, one of the lives cut short was that of 9 year old Christina Taylor Green who taught us something by her death. She was born on 9/11 and was profiled in a book called Faces of Hope.  In an interview with her distraught parents they reflected that at an early age Christina was interested in politics.  At age 9 she'd already declared her intention to attend Penn State University to work with those less fortunate than her.  By being born on 9/11 and knowing the details of that day, Christina often told her parents that something better would happen in the world because of 9/11.  She encouraged them to think in terms of hope and possibility rather than of the tragedy.

With those words in mind, let us too be vigilant and conscious of our words, ideas and actions.  Let us honor these victims who gave their lives so something "better" could be envisioned in the world.  Let us hold the ideal of a national discourse based on respect and civility even while agreeing to disagree.

We can do this in daily practices or meditations by lighting a candle and holding this vision for just a minute or two.  Imagine the wave of this ideal permeating the atmosphere and softening the disharmony not just in this country but all over the world.  Imagine that!
