Although one friend thought Kiyoshi Kurosawa's "Tokyo Sonata" was the saddest film she had ever seen, this wonderful film was also comical. The sad part was a statement of the destructive effects of partriarchy --the huge burden it places on men and the emotional unraveling that occurs when the ability to provide and "protect" is threatened. A humourous edge was added through the comical ways in which people try to hide reality. Hopefully, this film makes it to the theatres; see it if you can.
