Hobo or Satchel

The word hobo is tossed around a lot in the world of purses and we at Handbag Heaven like a good hobo as well as the next gal, but not to the exclusion of all other styles. As far as trends go, I have to believe that when my mother-in-law tells me that she's looking for a black hobo bag, the trend has probably reached the mature phase, much like my mother-in-law.

It can be confusing to know just what is considered a hobo bag because the term is used so loosely in today's fashion world, but basically, it refers to a handbag usually with one shortish strap that fits over the shoulder and the bag itself is slouchy in the middle such that when placed on a table or chair, it collapses in the center forming into a crescent-like shape. The hobo is considered to be part of the boho (or bohemian hippie) style that has been around a few seasons and continues to be very popular. Some examples follow.

The satchel bag is a bit different in that it has more structure than the hobo bag. It can look like a case or doctor's bag. It is often smaller at the top than at the bottom forming a slight triangular shape, but can also be found to be the same width at the top and bottom. It is odd that this is the look look has morphed into the satchel bag since the original use of satchel was a bag was carrying books and clothes in a leather bag that more resembles what we call a messenger bag today.
