Acupuncture for Alzheimer's-Related Depression

Harmony Health Acupuncture and Herbs

Chances are you have friends or family dealing with Alzheimer’s Disease. If so, you’re familiar with the striking loss of memory, body function and emotional challenges that accompany it.

Depression and anxiety are common. But don’t let frustration and/or lack of information from injecting a note of optimism in this gloomy scenario.

Acupuncture can help.

The World Health Organization recognizes acupuncture as an effective treatment for depression. In addition, a 2000 study from the Wellesley College Center for Research on Women took 11 elderly patients – average age 76 – with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s or Vascular Dementia. They received acupuncture two to three times a week while continuing with their prescribed medication.

At the end of three months, researchers concluded that acupuncture reduced anxiety and depression. Not only that, the patients had less pain and more energy.

“Acupuncture appears to be very helpful in relieving anxiety, improving mood, increasing energy, improving some aspects of well-being and decreasing mood-related behaviors,” the study said.

The results, presented at the World Conference on Alzheimer’s, underscored the ability of Chinese Medicine practitioners to improve neurological function. In recent years, neurological mapping has demonstrated how acupuncture acts on the nervous system, the ultimate arbiter of mental and physical homeostasis in the body.

Before things get bad, initiate changes to reduce your own vulnerability to Alzheimer’s

Take really good care of yourself. Steady exercise is one way. Another is perhaps the most obvious: watch what you eat.

A recent long-term study by German, Italian and American researchers showed that a low-fat diet rich in fruits and vegetables – basically a Mediterranean Diet – lowered one’s exposure to Alzheimer’s. Conversely, the study concluded that an unhealthy diet raised one’s exposure.

One more thing: as you care for a loved one with Alzheimer’s, don’t forget about your own needs with acupuncture. A few needles can help you too.
