You already know that eating vegetables, including carrots, is good for your health – but can eating carrots make you more attractive to the opposite sex? According to a study conducted at Bristol and St. Andrews Universities in the U.K, munching on carrots and other foods high in carotenoids increases your attractiveness to others.
Eating Carrots: Can It Make You More Attractive?
In a study carried out in the U.K, researchers asked forty volunteers to focus in on the faces of 51 different people and describe how healthy and attractive they looked. A common theme kept emerging. The participants described faces with yellow undertones as being desirable from a physical standpoint – and they also perceived yellow-hued faces to be healthier. In fact, the hue they found to be attractive was the skin color that comes from eating carrots and other carotenoid foods.
If you eat carrots and other foods high in carotenoids in very large amounts, you can develop an orange skin tone similar to a bad suntan. But the researchers pointed out that eating smaller quantities of foods high in carotenoids on a regular basis produces a more subtle yellow hue to the skin without a risk of toxicity. In fact, carotenoids have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits – and they’re just plain healthy. That’s why moms urge kids to eat more carrots.
Other foods that are high carotenoids are cantaloupe, sweet potatoes, papaya, red peppers, winter squash, collard greens, mangoes, kale and spinach – among others. These “good for you” foods are not only good sources of antioxidants, but some of the carotenoids are converted into vitamin A, a vitamin that’s essential for good night vision.
The Benefits of Eating Carrots and Carotenoid Foods
Researchers point out one of the more compelling benefits of this study. They suggest that parents tell teens to eat carrots and other foods high in carotenoids to be more attractive. This is more motivating to some teens than rambling on about the health benefits. Give them this information, and they may reach for a slice of cantaloupe instead of a cup of ice cream next time they have a sweet tooth.
The Bottom Line
There’s lots of ways to get teens to eat carrots and other vegetables that don’t really work. This may be just the research they need to change their eating habits - for the better.
