As Thanksgiving approaches, I have even more cause than usual to reflect on just what I am most grateful for this year.

All around me, all around you, are growing numbers of families who this year will struggle to put together a Thanksgiving meal, who may depend upon the donations and generosity of others if they are to eat turkey, if they are to eat at all.  I am reminded that Thanksgiving is not just a day to appreciate what we have, but to share with those who are in need.

All around me are the family members and dear friends who have seen me through my Whipple surgery.  While in the hospital for a week, a family member was present every minute of every day, ensuring that I was getting the best care possible.  Now that I am out of the hospital and recovering, I am still in the care of family and surrounded by old friends.

And I didn’t have to hear the big C word following removal of my pancreatic cyst.  Instead, I am holding fast to the big “H” - health, good health, and I am so absolutely grateful for that.

I can be a bit cynical about holidays, or holiday marketing in particular, but Thanksgiving is one holiday I truly appreciate.  A meal prepared and shared with loved one’s for no reason other than to notice and appreciate what we have together - now that’s worth celebrating.

I wish good health, joy and peace to all this Thanksgiving.
