One of the most common conditions I see these days is a lack of sensation in the legs and feet.

It's hard to imagine not feeling connected to the ground.

The condition doesn't just affect diabetics, who frequently experience numbness in the feet due to damage to the microvessels that normally energize our various appendages with blood. I am treating people with edema and poor circulation who are impossible to tickle. Or whose legs dangle like inanimate objects carrying them from point A to point B through basic evolution and nothing else.

Injury is a factor for some patients. Blood stagnations may have developed during the healing process, especially if the repairs are incomplete. More and more people on statin drugs seem to be aware of neuropathies. Whatever the cause, I've been able to offer relief through Chinese Medicine.

How so?

You don't need to get your diabetes resolved first (though addressing the causes and symptoms of diabetes is ALWAYS a good idea). Try starting with Chinese Medical Massage - known as Tui Na - which works very well at improving circulation by moving Qi and Blood. I use it often because it's effective and feels good.

Tui Na operates on the same principles as acupuncture, which means the massage makes use of the energy channels, as well as the acupuncture points through acupressure (the application of touch to various acupuncture points). It's an invaluable tool because in cases of edema, for example, you often don't want to use needles for fear of infection. Also, some people just don't like needles. But a 45-minute to one-hour session can begin to do wonders for lifeless legs and feet.

That said, my Tui Na treatments are often combined with acupuncture depending on the extent of the leg/foot problem. If it's not safe or comfortable - perhaps because people with leg/foot issues suffer from a combination of numbness and pain - points outside the leg can be used to systemically treat the causes of poor circulation and edema. In Chinese Medicine terms, I might address dampness (inflammation), blood stagnation or blood deficients. Maybe all three at the same time.

I usual combine the above with range of motion to insure positive blood flow through the joints from the hips down to the ankles. Sensation depends on good circulation.

A one-hour treatment goes for $50. Every additional 15 minutes is an extra $15. For best results, plan on at least three treatments.

We all want to feel the sand between our toes or the rush of an invigorating walk. There's a safe and natural way to get there.
