How Long Do Eyelash Extensions Last?
Posted on September 14, 2011 by Xtreme Lashes
Probably the most frequently asked eyelash extension-related question is “how long will they last”. It may also be one of the most complicated eyelash extension questions to answer. Why? Because there is no absolute answer. Here’s why:
THE NATURAL LASH LIFECYCLE VARIES: Xtreme Lashes eyelash extension products and application techniques are designed to allow natural shedding of the extensions. Your eyelash extensions, under normal circumstances and care, should fall off with the natural lashes they are attached to, not before. There are some things you can do (like making good health choices) that can affect the growth rate of your lashes but much of it is genetic.
Natural Extension Shedding
Your Natural Lashes Are At Different Stages Of Growth!
Natural eyelashes grow in and fall out in cycles (every 60 to 90 days). When a natural lash matures and falls out, a new lash has already been growing and quickly replaces it without us noticing the turnover. Most people will typically shed between one and five natural lashes each day, depending on their individual growth cycles. Since your eyelash extensions are attached to the natural lashes, they will each shed whenever the natural lash they are attached to reaches the end of its growth cycle – which varies.
Your Lash Growth Rate Is Unique!
Genetics, diet, drinking, smoking, medications, hormones… all of these affect how fast or slow your natural lashes grow. In addition, the use of eyelash enhancement serums can accelerate natural lash growth. When eyelash extensions are applied on individuals with faster growing natural lashes, they will obviously be shedding sooner and vice versa.
PREMATURE SHEDDING ISSUES AFFECT EXTENSION BONDS: Premature shedding is a breakdown of the eyelash extension adhesive bond that causes the eyelash extension to fall off before the natural lash it is attached to sheds. Most, if not all, premature shedding can be prevented by the choices you make as a consumer!
Premature Extension Shedding
Your Lifestyle!
While eyelash extensions are water resistant and will withstand a moderate amount of exposure to the elements, the attachment to your natural lash isn’t indestructible. Participating in an above average-level of activities related to heat or constant water exposure could weaken the adhesive bond. A competitive swimmer who is constantly in chlorinated water may have some premature extension loss as may someone who receives frequent facials (weekly) or uses a steam room daily. If you sleep on your face or side, you could also lose some extensions early because of the constant friction against your pillow throughout the night!
Your Aftercare!
Following your aftercare instructions and using eyelash extension-approved cosmetics will help prevent premature extension loss and ensure longer lasting results. When new lash extensions are applied, they must stay dry for the first 48 hours to give the adhesive time to fully bond. Products containing oils (plus the oils from your own skin if you frequently touch your lashes) and waterproof mascaras should also be avoided the entire time you have eyelash extensions as they can weaken the adhesive bond.
The Application Products Used!
Not all lash application products are created equal – especially when it comes to adhesives and lash primers. Do your homework! Search online, ask your friends and read reviews to see which products are giving people long-lasting results and which ones are *ahem* fl-utter failures.
The Technique Of The Professional!
Just as with products, the skill of the stylist is immensely important. Again, do your research! Choose an eyelash extension professional with comprehensive training from a reputable company, like Xtreme Lashes, and check up on them further. Search for comments on their Facebook page, look up Yelp reviews, and ask to see photos of their actual work if you don’t see them posted anywhere online. Make sure the photos you look at are not just photos provided by the company supplying their products and training! It’s okay if someone is using some manufacturer photos for advertising but they should also have some of their own work to show.
WHAT’S IT ALL MEAN: So, we’ve covered that it’s not really possible to tell someone how long their eyelash extensions will last with CERTAINTY, but is there a best guess? A ballpark? An average maybe?
Sample Extension Loss
Xtreme Lashes Stylists will apply eyelash extensions primarily to the natural lashes that are in the middle of their life cycle to maximize the amount of time before the natural lash sheds. (Younger ‘baby’ lashes are too weak and delicate to extend).
Assuming you avoid the things that can cause “Premature Shedding” as we mentioned above, you should expect to shed, on average, one fourth of your extended lashes every two to three weeks through the natural growth cycle of your eyelashes. If you choose not to maintain your extensions with relashes to replace those that have shed, you should have little to no remaining extensions about two months after your initial application.
You Can Maintain Eyelash Extensions Indefinitely!
Relashes are typically only needed once every two to four weeks to replace the extensions that have shed and to keep your extended lashes looking full.
