FANS SHOW ENTHUSIASM FOR THE PLAYERS IN PERSON AND ONLINE

From the live feed chat room on the official Sarasota Open website, to the Facebook profile, fan pages and various Twitter accounts, the internet is buzzing about the young players competing in The 2010 Sarasota Open at The Tennis Gardens at Longboat Key Club and Resort.

With thousands of fans paying to watch live feeds coming from Sarasota, Kei Nishikori easily claims the prize for drawing the most international attention. Fan clubs all over Tokyo and surrounding Japanese communities are in a fever pitch hoping to witness their player in a back-to-back tournament winning streak. Nishikori won the USTA tournament last week in Savannah.

The other players have not failed to garner their own attention, though. During last night’s long, intense match between Jesse Levine (USA) and Daniel Garza (MEX), the American fans at the tournament were clearly favoring their home-grown boy. Garza pulled ahead to win in spite of Levine’s support system. The 2010 Sarasot Open men’s singles semi-finals can now boast a different country for each of it’s players: Dabul from Argentina, Sweeting from the US, Garza from Mexico and Nishikori from Japan. It’s a true international convention of talent. The men’s doubles holds the same claim with teams from Australia, Germany, the Philippines/India and the US.
Play starts at noon today (Friday) with four matches scheduled on Center Court. The evening match between Nishikori (JPN) and Sweeney (USA) will start no earlier than 6:30pm.

‘SEASON’ IS LENGTHENED WITH THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF THE SARASOTA OPEN

As the weather warms up and the humidity increases, seasonal visitors and many tourists traditionally make their way back to cooler climates. With Easter coming early this year the region could have felt the traffic drop in April. On Longboat Key and the surrounding areas though, business is booming. The airport, gas stations, hotels, restaurants, shops and more got a nice surge of international and national visitors this week.

The Sarasota Open began with Qualifying Rounds on May 8th with 32 professional tennis players trying to win a spot in the Main Draw tournament that began on Monday, May 10th and continues through May 15th. Besides the Qualifying winners, an additional 28 professional players traveled to the area to compete in the Main Draw. All of these players have coaches, family, friends and sometimes agents traveling with them. They hail from around the globe with over half of them coming from outside the country.

Add to that traveling crowd the professionals sent from the United States Tennis Association. We’ve got the Tournament Supervisor, the Chief Official and forty additional line and chair officials who travel around the country to officiate the USTA Challenger Tournaments.

These are just the individuals who are in town to do their job (or to support someone who is doing their job). You also have the tourists who follow tennis and travel to locations that host events such as The Sarasota Open. Being hosted by the renowned Resort at Longboat Key, this tournament is high on the attraction list for many tennis fans. With players like Kei Nishikori who was drawing fan clubs of 3000+ in Tokyo locations just to watch the Sarasota live stream and Taylor Dent who has a huge US fan base, The Sarasota Open attracts visitor and fan attention that compares to tournaments with a much longer history.

This enthusiasm has made national officials take notice, too. The Director of the Professional Division (U.S. Open) was a visitor to Longboat Key during this years’ Qualifying Rounds and there is talk that The Sarasota Open will be bumped up to a higher category in the near future. With this comes bigger purse money which means bigger names follow. It also means more Officials, more visitors, more media coverage, more fans and more economic impact.

The success of the Sarasota Open is due to the praise it receives from players, officials, the media and fans. It’s not uncommon to hear people talking about coming back next year… even if it means rearranging tour stops. The Sarasota region knows a little something about creating fans of its own. How many permanent residents started out as vacationers? The Sarasota Open expands on this effort by representing the region in the tennis world with this same beauty, hospitality and genuine enthusiasm for its location and the people who enjoy it. The Sarasota Open has officially made May part of the ‘season’.

AREA CLUBS COMPETE TO WIN CLUB OF THE YEAR AT THE 2010 SARASOTA OPEN

Tuesday was “Club Day” at The 2010 Sarasota Open. Area clubs of all kinds vied to be named The Sarasota Open Club of the Year’. The club with the biggest representation of members at the tournament that day won the title and their name engraved on the Club of the Year trophy which will be on permanent display in downtown Sarasota at Media on Main, one of the tournament’s loyal sponsors.

The definition of ‘Club’ was broad in this situation: tennis clubs, golf club, country clubs, fitness clubs, sports clubs and social clubs were all included. At the entrance to the tournament, the Clubs in attendance were listed on a leader board. Spectators were encouraged to write their home club on a slip of paper and drop it in the crystal trophy. Regular counts were made throughout the day to keep the leader board up to date. The front gate volunteers kept a watchful eye to make sure the results were fair.

Sharon Petrik, Marketing Director for Serendipity Country Club was on a mission. She used social networking and good old-fashioned word-of-mouth to build enthusiasm. Her efforts paid off big time. While over a dozen clubs were listed, Serendipity posted a total over fives times that of the next contender. El Conquistador came in second place with The Landings a close third. Many club members got enthused to get their clubs out in full force to take the 2011 Club of the Year award for themselves.

2010 Sarasota Open sponsor Evolution Health Club gave away sports bottles and fitness training throughout the day. Due to some very long matches, the scheduled Serendipity Cardio Tennis demonstration was moved to Friday just prior to the evening match.

Today is Professional’s Day at the 2010 Sarasota Open. Area business people will be playing ‘hooky’ on Hump Day to watch the world-class tennis. A Happy Hour is scheduled at the Player’s Lounge 5:30-7:30pm. Members of all area Chambers, Associations and Organizations are invited to network while watching the evening’s matches on Center Court. Admission to the Happy Hour is included with event ticket. Tickets start at $15 and can be purchased at the gate.

And then there’s the news ON the courts! Taylor Dent (USA) was forced to retire his match due to injury on Monday night. He was a tournament favorite. During the first match of the day Tuesday on center court, the heat and humidity got the best of Tyler Deheart (USA) who also retired his match due to cramping in his leg.

Today, local favorite, Sekou Bangoura is currently playing the first match on Court 8 after defeating 9th seed Robert Kendrick (USA) last night. The Americans, Ty Braswell and Derek Myers face doubles partners Andreas Siljestrom (SWE) and Joseph Sirianni (AUS) on center court after 4:30pm. The Aussie Pair Kaden Hensel and Adam Hubble take on fellow Aussie Greg Jones and his partner, Jose (rubin) Statham from New Zealand on Court 8 in the last doubles match of the day. Tim Smyczek (USA) is scheduled to face off with Kei Nishikori (JPN) on center court in today’s last singles match.

LOCAL YOUTHS IMPACTING THE WORLD SHINE AMONGST THE CELEBRITIES AND VIPs AT MONDAY NIGHT’S PLAYERS PARTY.

Amongst the tennis celebrities, politicians, business CEOs and local socialites, the real stand-outs at the 2010 Sarasota Open VIP Player’s Party were three polite and charming youngsters representing their Charity for the evening. Taking Back Lives is a 2010 Sarasota Open charitable partner. The charity was featured the VIP Player’s Party generously hosted last night at the home of Congressman Vern Buchanan and his lovely wife, Sandy.

Taking Back Lives founder, Cassandra Yoder is a mature 19 years old. Three years ago, Cassandra volunteered at the Dzanja La Chifundo Orphanage in Malawi. Upon her return, she felt compelled to do something beyond her one-month visit, and after much research and deliberation, Cassandra decided that education would have the greatest impact. Subsequently, Taking Back Lives began in order to provide educational opportunities to the children of Malawi and Taking Back Lives was born.

In 2008, then 21 year old Dan McNeillie joined forces with plans to combine a corporate approach of construction and development with the educational goals of Taking Back Lives. Dan is slated to leave next month to start construction on the Charities first school building in Malawi.

Wrapping up the threesome last night was Michael Moran, a talented 13 year old graphic artist who has created a line of apparel the Charity is rolling out in the near future. The apparel will be featured at the Charity’s many youth-focused events in high schools and colleges. Regional bands have lent their support to the cause and have agreed to market the clothing line during their tours and performances. To manufacture, Taking Back Lives has chosen “Eden”, a manufacturing company founded by Bono, the lead singer of U2. All the items are made in Malawi – adding to the charity’s ultimate goal of empowering Malawians.

The youths garnered adult support last night in running their extensive silent auction from the Charity’s “matriarch”, Kay Yoder (Cassandra’s mother), Board Member Brenda and Craig Wilson and Denny Yoder (Cassandra’s father) who’s company, Yoder Homes & Remodeling, also joined with the 2010 Sarasota Open as a corporate sponsor.

It’s inspirational to witness the outreach of this young Charity. In addition to their influence in Malawi, Taking Back Lives has created opportunities for US based (and especially Sarasota/Bradenton based) high school and college age kids to impact the world through their various clubs, programs and internship offerings.

The 2010 Sarasota Open is proud to include Taking Back Lives as a benefitting charitable partner. Learn more about Taking Back Lives at: www.TakingBackLives.org

Mother’s Day was also Kid’s Day at The 2010 Sarasota Open. The crowd was larger than expected for the qualifying rounds. Besides free admission, all kids in attendance participated in on court games, drills and contests to win prizes generously donated by Iberia Bank, Evolution Fitness Club, Hurricane Tennis Academy and Market Creative. Coaches and instructors from Hurricane Tennis Academy held court while the kids were the real stars. A couple of the youngsters played as if they belonged on center court themselves! Watch out pros… you’ve got some serious talent coming up the ranks! Moms were treated to cookies by Sift Bakery while the rest of the crowd absorbed the thrills and upsets of the second day of Qualifying at The 2010 Sarasota Open. Demos and information was provided by “I Train Your Kids” and “6 Kids ‘N Fit”.

Starting off the day, 28 year old Nicholas Monroe (USA) from Phoenix upset Greg Ouelette (USA), the 23 year old four-time All-American from University of Florida. Ouellette had impressed his fans recently by jumping nearly 200 places in the ATP World Tour rankings during the latter half of 2009.

After a grueling match yesterday to defeat formerly ranked top 100 player Sandor Noszaly (HUN), Mac Styslinger (USA) lost his bid for a spot in the Main Draw to Bruno Rodriguez from Mexico. Rodriguez is on a climb up the ranks having beat Andre Begemann, a top 200 ranked player last month in South Africa. Rodriguez is currently ranked 406 in the world.
