Why are we so serious when we become mothers?
Is it because we have no sleep, no breaks, never ending housework and chores, no or very little praise and acknowledgement, no vacations, no bonuses or raises or salaries for that matter and we never seem to get caught up with everything ever? Hmm, seems like those could be some of the reasons.
"How can I find anything fun when I am overwhelmed and exhausted, Michelle?" asked a client during one of our life coaching sessions. I responded with, "Exactly my question. How can you find fun?"
There was silence first of all. Then a long, loud sigh and then came the tears..... I waited. And waited. Until finally a very little response came that sounded like a whimper.
"Well, I guess I could ask my mother for some help with my baby................. I could stop volunteering at school so much or at least till I have my bearings back................ I guess I could rest when my child takes a nap........ I could ask my husband if he minded bringing home Chinese food on Fridays....... We could go out on a date every other Saturday, if I asked my neighbor to watch my kids and then I would reciprocate... I love the movies, especially the romantic comedies, they are so funny. Did you see the Hangover, oh my goodness, I couldn't stop laughing! We had so much fun......!!! Aaaahhh!" My client burst into hysterical laughter and had a huge release!
The magic word was "could" in her response. It gave her the feeling of hope and relieved a lot of her stress. I asked her if she chose to start doing all those things so that she "could" bring some fun back into her life. She joyfully said yes and left our session feeling better than she had in months or years for that matter. All I did was ask her a question, she did the rest of the work. No matter how busy you are or stressed or overwhelmed, a little bit of fun, no matter how small can make the world a different place. I have become a much better mother, partner, friend and coach since bringing humor and fun into all I do. Of course at the appropriate time and situation!
So, now I am asking you. What "could" you do to bring a bit more fun into your life?
Here are some tips for those of you that are stumped:
* Take everything with a grain of salt! Ease up and relax a bit more!
* Be silly at least 3 times a day!
* Instead of scolding your children all the time, laugh with them, they will love it!
* Plan your fun and then enjoy whatever the outcome is!
