Can a breach in conversation etiquette really prevent a second date?

Absolutely. Believe it or not, there are certain rules to keep in mind when conversing on your first date. If you truly want a second or even third date, follow a few simple conversational rules and you will be well on your way to that next date.

Avoid controversial topics.
Talk revolving around politics, religion, and sex can cause arguments you would much rather avoid on a first date. Unless you know for certain you will agree on these topics, it may be best to leave them out until a later date. Once you are more comfortable with each, then you can start discussing and debating each others opinions.

Keep personal problems to yourself.
Your date does not need to know about your recent female problems or your athlete’s foot on the first date. When they ask to know more about you, leave the really personal issues out of the conversation. If the relationship is meant to be, they will find out those things later. You want to be yourself, but try to be your best self.

Live in the present, not the future.
Nothing will scare off a date better than talk of the future. Its fine to talk about your own goals and dreams, but do not talk about marrying your date or having kids together. After all, this is only your first date. You need to get to know each other before you plan your future together.

Remember you are over your ex.
Unless specifically asked, do not talk about your exs. Obviously your old relationships are over for a reason. Do not let them interfere with the possibility of a new one. There will be plenty of time in the future to talk about how horrible your exs were. Remember the previous rule. You are on a first date; there is not a future yet.

Be a good listener.
Talk about yourself, but don’t forget to listen to your date as well. Ask them questions and listen to them without interruption. This will make you more attractive to your date. Many dates have ended early simply because one or the other never stopped talking. Prove that you really are interested by being a good listener. They will return the favor.

Keep these rules in mind on your next first date. These will take some of the pressure off of you and make the date much more pleasant for both of you.
