Maybe Think Again

Some Simple Needs of a Happy Person

Thomas Jefferson once said, “I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it.”

Do you have liberty, or the freedom to choose what you will do in your daily life? Consider these five ways to tell if you are a happy person and provide encouragement for those who are unemployed.

Read each paragraph and think about it.
If you have a job, be grateful. If you don’t have a job, don’t worry because you can’t be unemployed forever.

Food

Let’s start out with that most basic need of food. Are you dying from starvation? No. Do you have food in your refrigerator? Yes. Then you are happy because you are better off than millions of starving people around the world. The next time you stop by McDonalds or Starbucks, think about how the universe has provided you with the option to eat something every day.

Computer

If you are reading this article, then you have access to a computer. Although having a computer should not be a sign of happiness, if you use the computer to connect to your world, you are happy. Billions of people don’t have access to a computer. You have the means at your disposal to find out about anything. Just go to “Google” and type it in. If you felt unhappy before, be glad that you have access to information. Remember, knowledge is power.

Gas

Do you have gas in your car? Yes. Then you are happy. Why? You have the ability to travel anywhere locally as long as you have gas in your car. It beats the alternative of riding a bicycle or walking everywhere that you need to go. In the summer heat of 100 degrees Fahrenheit, having gas is a good thing.

Air-Conditioning/Heat

Do you have A/C in the summer? Do you have heat in the winter? If you answered yes, then you are happy. You don’t have to scrounge around for fuel to stay warm or cool. Your family isn’t struggling from diseases related to poor ventilation. You have all your basic needs met because, if you have A/C or heat, you obviously have a place to live.

Clothes

Are you wearing clothes? Yes. You are happy. Many people need basic things like clothes. If you go into your closet and find a whole assortment of clothes, then you are better off than most. It’s better to have clothes than to have to sweat and stain your clothes and wear them in this condition over and over.

The next time that you think you are unhappy because you don’t have a job or money flowing into your pockets, read this passage again
. You have more than most if your basic needs are met. Appreciate what you have had and what you have in this life. What more do you need?
