Keeping The Kids Busy

The daily afternoon rains have arrived, the mercury is rising and parents everywhere are hearing their children cry "I'm bored!" But with a little creativity and forethought summer boredom will be a thing of the past.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

* Splish-Splash: There's nothing better than playing in the water on a hot summer day. Set up a splash zone in the backyard to help the kids beat the heat. A small wading pool, a sprinkler, some water toys and water balloons should do the trick. And please don't forget the sunscreen!

* Art Treasure Chest: Keep plenty of art supplies on hand for the whole summer. As the kids complete their pieces, gather them for an end of the summer backyard art show. Invite grandparents, aunts and uncles and neighborhood friends for a "gallery tour" and ice cream.

* Rainy Day Camping: When the summer rain showers put a damper on outdoor fun, move the adventures inside to a living room camp ground. Build a fort using blankets, pillows and furniture for hours of rainy day fun. Add some microwave s'mores and you'll forget you are inside!

* Storytelling: Acting out favorite stories will whisk your child away into lands faraway through creative play. For older children you can even take the stories on the road to local nursing homes or day care centers.
