In Your Relationship
Is your relationship as strong as it used to be? Are you wondering where the magic went? Has the intimacy decreased?
When a relationship starts, couples talk and laugh together. As time goes on, they slowly quit communicating and things change – they forgot how to talk to one another. The foundation to any strong relationship is communication and the more we talk to our partner, the stronger the bond.
In order to strengthen the relationship you have to start talking to each other again. The communication process has to be re-built and although this may not always be easy, it’s not as difficult as you may think.
-- Set aside time to talk. Remove all distractions, turn off the television and simply sit down with a cup of coffee, or cool drink, and start talking. Talk about your day, what happened at work, why you think the price of groceries has become so high. Talk about anything. The subject doesn’t matter, but the fact that you’re now communicating does.
-- Take a walk. This gets you out of the house and into a one-on-one situation. Walk around the block and hold hands. Make the physical connection and then start talking. Comment on how nice the neighbour’s yard looks, the events of your day, what you should do together on the weekend. Talk. Talk. Talk.
-- Make a date. You have to get back into dating and rekindle the romantic spirit. Take in a movie, but don’t simply go home afterwards. Go to the small bistro and have a coffee, take a walk in the park, or along the beach. Use this time to be with each other and talk. This will extend the date and end the evening with enjoyable conversation.
-- Talk over dinner. Breakfast and lunch may be okay, but if you find yourself getting into a really good conversation you may have to end it too abruptly. Dinner is ideal because you have all evening to talk if you want. Eat your dinner at the kitchen table, in the dining room, or on the patio - without any television, or newspapers, that may distract from your conversation.
-- Don’t let the intimacy end when the sex does. Your love making should extend beyond the physical act and finish with some tender cuddling and conversation. This is an ideal time for a little light talk … some romantic words and conversational bonding. Don’t waste these precious moments with sleep.
-- Listen to your partner. This is an extremely important part of communicating. Stop and listen to what your partner is saying. Don’t dominate the conversation. Effective communication has you both involved in the discussion.
Improve your communication and you’ll strengthen your relationship – it’s as simple as that. This may be a little awkward at first, but it’s only because you’re out of practice. With a little effort, you and your partner will once again be laughing and giggling like teenage lovers.
