Judy Dean of POPS Extras! (
www.POPSExtras.org)has successfully written a grant to benefit Every Child's Voice, Inc. (ECV) - an arts-based, after school program for underserved children held at the Robert Taylor Community Center. Adequately preparing young adults to become productive members of society is a vital component in ECV’s mission and a service desperately needed in the community ECV serves. The program places an emphasis survival skills, academic achievement and arts enrichment. The programming further provides topics of interest and benefit to underserved youngsters, thereby encouraging enrollment in the program. Academics and positive recreational programs are key elements in the development of sound and productive values, particularly in a high-risk neighborhood. Breaking the cycle of risky familial behaviors and shaping the lives of our young at an impressionable age are essential. ECV is an arts enrichment program for children 6-12 years old. The program offers music instruction, dance lessons and theater. The ECV children’s choir is designed to teach team work, discipline and instill a sense of pride. Music is also used to enhance the child’s math ability. Dance is used as a form of exercise and to enhance coordination. Theater classes are designed for creative expression, allowing a child to act out in a constructive manner. The entire program is designed to discover and cultivate hidden talents in our children, thereby preparing them for success in whatever they endeavor.
A much-needed component of the program is the Healthy Child Initiative, providing wholesome and nutritious food daily for all children in the neighborhood. For many children, this may be the best and/or only healthy meal a child receives each day.
