Social Etiquette Tip of the Week - Which Bread Plate is Mine?

Standing by a table of guests at a recent wedding, I just couldn't help but overhear their conversation. "Which bread plate is mine?" “Is that your water glass or mine”?

It's okay to admit that you get anxious when you see a plethora of stemware on the table…and there’s nothing wrong with confessing that you're not sure where to put your bread!

Figuring out which water goblet is yours could be one of the first decisions you would be required to make as oftentimes, napkins are in the water goblet when you arrive at the table.

Below are a couple of great ways to help you remember.

Bread on the Left (b), Drink on the Right (d)

One easy way to remember is to think of the BMW car. While sitting at the table read BMW left to right as you normally read. Your Bread plate is the one on the left "B". Your Meal is in the middle "M". And Water is on the right "W".

And here is a tip from Martha Stewart. Hold both hands in front of you, palms facing each other. Use the tips of your thumb and forefinger to make a circle on each hand. The remaining three fingers in each hand point upwards. Your left hand will form a "b" and your right hand will form a "d". Bread (b) is on the left, and drink (d) is on the right.

Remember these tips and you will never have to guess again!

What a clever idea about the BMW: Bread, Meal, Water. I love these helpful hints from Maria Brady. She is Sarasota's best Ms. Etiquette and the greatest event planner in all of Florida. Believe me, it's True!!!

I am not a fan of Martha's I must admit, but I like that tip - just like remembering in a hurry Left from Right. Hands up, palms out, thumbs pointed together, index finger straight up; which hand makes an 'L'? Left!
