Are you one of those people who spends most of your time taking care of others? If you are, bless you! Caregivers are wonderful people and their labor of love is desparately needed in our society.

These people take care of others, nurture and give of themselves out of deep love. This is a wonderful thing, but, when you as caregiver care for others to the extent that you neglect your own needs, it's no longer a good thing.

Here's what I mean. To take care of our loved ones, we first need to take care of ourselves. If we neglect our own needs to provide for the needs of others, we are cheating ourselves and those we care for. That should be in balance, with our needs at least equal (if not above) the needs of others.

What happens if that balance is lost, and the needs of the caregiver are neglected? Over time, one thing that happens is burn-out of the caregiver. In addition to that, the caregiver will begin to feel resentful. They will find it impossible to perform these tasks with patience, love and compassion. They will become overwhelmed with anger and resentment and feel like a martyr and a victim.

That's why I say "Wake Up, It's Your Turn" to anyone in the role of caregiver. Take care of your needs first. Proper rest, nutrition, exercise, and socialization are all parts of taking care of yourself. When you do these things for yourself, you will be better able to give of yourself in a loving way. Isn't that what you really want anyway?
