Sarasota Film Festival Award Winners Announced at Filmmaker's Tribute Event

The shift of the Sarasota Film Festival's Tribute Event from a pricey black-tie gala to an event that was accessible to just about anyone was a commendable metamorphosis. The Sarasota Opera House was the perfect backdrop for the annual awards ceremony. Stanley Tucci told the audience that the festival "is quickly becoming one of our favorita festivals." Director Hal Ashby's life was honored with a montage of films including Harold and Maude, Coming Home, Being >There, and Lookin' To Get Out. Bill Paxton stated that Ashby "made some of the most beloved fims of my generation." He shared a story of a date he hurriedly ditched after she said leaving a showing of Harold and Maude sayi "I didn't get it." An onstage conversation about Ashby was held between Jon Voight,burt Young, close friend Diane Schroeder and biographer Nick Dawson.

The most moving moment of the night occurred when Ashby's daughter, Leigh McManus, who has only known her father through his films accepted the award. McManus disclosed her belief that the little girl in "Lookin' To Get Out" who didn't know her father was her. But this night, she felt her father's presence, tearfully stating "I just know he's here somehow."
