A flu shot isn't the answer to avoiding the Swine Flu, no matter how many time you hear that suggestion.
The key to avoiding the flu or any illness from colds to allergies is to build a strong immune system. Our own immune system is stronger than any vaccine or medicine that we can create in a laboratory. So here are key things to do – and things to avoid.
Do:
1. Eat a healthy diet, filled with vegetables, fruits, quality protein, and whole grains. Learn to love your veggies in all colors – they contain vitamins, minerals, and protective phytonutrients.
2. Get plenty of good bacteria. This means probiotics to fill the lower intestine, which is the “heart” of your immune system. The war begins here so keep it strong. Make sure your probiotics arrive in your intestine as live bacteria (many manufacturers only guarantee they were live when put in the bottle).
3. Boost your intake of key nutrients that directly impact your immune system by taking natural su pplements. Zinc, Vitamin C and the B vitamins are key.
4. Get plenty of rest. Nothing can replace this. Your body needs time to recuperate and rebuild every day.
5. Drink 8 or more glasses of water daily. Water is necessary for many chemical reactions in the body, protecting organs, lubricating joints, plus it carries away waste.
Avoid:
1. Sugar in all its forms. Whether it is high fructose corn syrup or plain white sugar it causes stress to our body by quickly converting to glucose and raising our blood sugar levels too rapidly. This causes our pancreas to shoot out insulin in large amounts and is very stressful to the body. Try stevia or xylitol instead. These are both natural sweeteners with little effect on blood sugar.
2. Stress. I know, that is hard to do. But try to spend just a few minutes several times a day doing some deep breathing and/or meditation. Both of these reduce our stress levels. Just close your eyes and imagine yourself sitting on the beach at Siesta Key; this can bring your stress levels down.
3. Excessive caffeine or alcohol intake. While research shows that the resveratrol in red wine is helpful to the immune system, drinking too much requires B vitamins to metabolize the alcohol, taking it away from more important duties.
Not only will you stay healthy through flu season, but this improves your overall health.
