An Abundance of Smiles at Lobster and Laughter

There were smiles all around at the Lobster and Laughter event to benefit Easter Seals.

This New England style event which is in its second year was chaired by one of Sarasota’s cutest couples, Valarie Wadsworth and Lee De Lieto. Gourmet cooks like Valarie can always be counted on to plan a mouth-watering menu. It was picnic at its best under a tent In Gillespie Park as guests dined on clam chowder, caesar salad, corn bread, whole lobster, baked potato, and cheesecake.

Guests adorned with bibs were seen cracking lobsters diligently with nutcrackers in hand, compelled to extract every morsel of the luscious meat. Lobsters could be seen bending, twisting and spurting their juices everywhere. And of course, the men had to make fun with their bibs. It was agreed that this messy event might not exactly be the best place for a first date. (What woman wants to see her date with the lobster centerpiece on his head...You’d have to love him). The first thing everyone did after their last bite was to head to the washroom, where every woman who entered the door seemed to exclaim with joy. These port-a-potties (aka mobile restrooms) were downright elegant! Outdoor event planners take note.

Dinner was followed with a comedy performance by The Lazy Fairy Improv Show with skits including a version of “Sarasota Idol,” but I’ve got to say it was Lee De Lieto who stole the show. Who knew this emcee for the evening was such a comedian! Lee’s gyrations to Justin Timberlake’s “Sexy Back” were said to be a private joke, but one that had everyone in the house laughing. Next on the agenda were raffle drawings and crab races. The crab races were over even faster than the Kentucky Derby. Next time, I’ll know better than to vote for the crab that seems fastest early in the evening; apparently, he got tired.
