Most patients sleep better after their acupuncture treatments.

It doesn't matter why they've come in. Could be a bad back, weight loss or any number of reasons. But when people revisit and I ask them about their sleep, the reports are almost universally positive.

Interestingly, sleep is a condition I am rarely asked to treat. While insomnia has various causes in Chinese Medicine - from extra body heat to overeating and lack of nourishing Qi - acupuncture's main benefit seems to lie in its powers of relaxation.

People who give acupuncture a chance almost always feel less stressed. One reason is that the physical body becomes more balanced as hormones, neurotransmitters, enzymes and other basic chemicals begin to flow more freely. This benefits all our organs. Naturally, it helps the mind, too.

Secondly, people's psychologies gain from being closely involved in the healing process. This can't be underestimated. By the time a person decides to try acupuncture, most have sought help from other practitioners, first and foremost Western doctors. We're rarely the first choice. But by the end of the initial treatment, they are often feeling feeling a greater sense of control and optimism.
