Blepharitis is an overgrowth of dead skin cells and bacteria that is normally found on the skin, and has blocked the eyelash follicle. Blepharitis is a common eye condition, causing the eyelids to be reddened, itchy and somewhat swollen. Overtime, scales become coarser, and crusts form on the lid. The natural lashes become thinner and sparse causing gaps between the natural lashes. Crusts may fall into the eye which feels like a gritty sensation.
SYMPTOMS
Crusty scaling around the lashes.
Redness or swelling around the eye.
A feeling like something is in the eye.
Itching.
A burning sensation.
Possible loss of eyelashes.
Take your index finger and carefully rest a warm cloth and apply a diluted solution of 50% baby shampoo or mild soap over the eye to soften the crusts. With a closed eye, carefully rub the lid margins several times using horizontal strokes. Rinse and pat dry.
PREVENTION
Keep you hands and face clean
Avoid rubbing your eyes with dirty fingers, a soiled handkerchief, etc.
Remove all eye makeup before retiring.
Blepharitis cannot be cured but can be controlled with proper eyelid hygiene. Left untreated blepharitis can develop into a more serious condition such as, scarring or injury to the eye tissue.
If you are in the early stages of treating blepharitis, avoid the use of eye makeup to prevent further irritation. Once you begin using makeup, throw away the old products.
