Class has more to do with how you carry yourself and deal with others than how much money you have in the bank. Being rich doesn’t necessarily mean being classy, and the reverse is true as well. Some are rude, flaunt their possessions, and are mean to others just to show everyone else that they are better, but that’s not the real way to show that one has class.
Here are some tips on how to act classy.

1. Don’t talk about money. Apart from a few special circumstances, there is no need to discuss how much you make and definitely no reason to ask how much money others make. If you own something expensive, there is no need for you to flaunt how much it’s worth. It’s different if you’re talking about investing or financing, but to unnecessarily bring up the topic merely to gloat or to be nosy about how much someone is worth is tacky and crude.

2. Don’t namedrop. You may think that letting others know that you are well-connected will raise their esteem, but that may not always be the case. Namedropping is riding on someone else’s achievements or popularity to boost your own. It usually just implies that you haven’t achieved much or aren’t very popular yourself.

3. Dress neatly. Your clothes don’t have to be designer labels but if it’s clean, in good condition, and suits you and the occasion, you will make a good impression. Same goes for everything else you may own. Forget about buying fakes and passing them off as the real thing. It will only embarrass you when you meet someone who can tell the difference between a fake and the real thing. Wear age-appropriate clothing. Nothing too revealing but nothing dowdy either. Know what colors and styles suit you. Don’t over-accessorize or put on too much makeup. Always remember that less is more.

4. Don’t gossip or talk about people behind their back. Speaking disparagingly of others, especially to make yourself look better in comparison will only give others the impression that you are petty, malicious and mean-spirited.

5. Don’t unnecessarily flatter someone in the hopes that you will get something out of it. There’s a difference between a sincere compliment and flattery.

6. Don’t judge people based on wealth, looks or popularity. It’s what’s inside that counts. And you may end up accidentally snubbing someone who actually is important because of your prejudices.

7. Act courteously. Good manners show good breeding and that’s something money can’t buy. Don’t order around or boss people in the service industry like waiters, sales people, and hotel staff. Treat everyone with respect.

8. Don’t fabricate. Rather than lie, shut up.

9. Don’t talk or laugh too loudly. You can be yourself but not draw unnecessary attention to yourself. Don’t act self-important. Modulate your voice to the volume appropriate to the situation. Don’t make a scene.

10. Remember that exaggeration is the opposite of classy. This doesn’t merely refer to the things we say, but in the way we act as well. Keep calm and maintain your poise at all times. Keep a level head even in emergencies.

11. Read. They say knowledge is power. A sharp mind will impress more people than wealth will.

12. Maintain proper posture. It’s such a simple thing but it makes a lot of difference. Slouching shows a person who feels defeated, while having a good posture exudes confidence in dealing with whatever life throws you.

Acting in a thoughtful, confident manner that is respectful of everyone will draw more people to you regardless of how much money you have. Learn to value inner beauty more than physical attractiveness and material wealth. Appreciate the beauty that is in you and you will learn to appreciate the beauty that is in others. That is what being classy is all about.
