About Me
I host a local TV Show called "Gimme Shelter Pet Adoption Show" which promotes shelter adoptions in the Sarasota/Bradenton area. Our mission is to get as many homeless pets out of the shelters and into loving homes as humanly possible. We feature a different animal shelter every few weeks, and repeatedly air the shows (think adoption promoting infomercial) on Channel 189 BLAB-TV in Sarasota, and various times on the Manatee Educational Channel.

We also run a foster program, bringing animalsfrom stressful high-kill county shelters in Florida and Georgia. We tend to their veterinary needs and help them adapt to a loving environment. Donations are
gratefully accepted to continue this program.

Gimme Shelter Pet Adoption is a 501(c) 3 non-profit, charitable organization founded in 2005. We are a completely volunteer run organization whose purpose is to rescue animals out of overcrowded shelters where they are at risk for disease and euthanasia. The animals are fostered in volunteer foster homes where we can keep them loved, healthy, and socialized until they can be placed in permanent, loving homes. Our hope is that all the animals placed through our organization will never experience being homeless or unloved again.

Donations help with the cost of rescue which includes; shelter fees, medications, spay/neuter, all shots, heartworm testing and treatment, monthly flea/tick/heartworm preventatives, microchips, dentals, surgeries, skin treatments, and any other health care deemed necessary by our vets. Our vets offer reduced charges so that we can keep our adoption fees reasonable, but their services are not free. We often rely on extra donations to pay expenses when the cost of care exceeds a realistic adoption fee. No members or volunteers are paid in any way from donations. All monies go towards the care of our foster animals. Donations are tax deductible.

Our Stress, Depression, Joy...Can Dogs Tell?

Posted on January 21, 2011 at 4:30pm 0 Comments

After a hard day at work, you come home and find that your dog had quite a day himself – at your expense. He took a vacation from his potty training, made mincemeat of your shoes and slobbered all over that blanket your grandmother knitted for you.

You get angry and your dog gives you the classic hangdog, guilty look. He knows you're mad. So does that mean your dog can sense your emotions? The answer is not as clear. Your reaction made it clear you – the pack leader – are upset, and…

I am delighted with your "Love 'em and Leash 'em" article. I've told my ex several times, "Thanks for the man magnet!"

Michelle, Does your foster program also help find homes for dogs that are not in shelters? A friend of mine recently had to take in her grandbaby who is ill & has severe allergies as a result she must give up her two dogs. Buddy is a 6yr old male boxer & Rio is a 3yr old female Lab/Doberman. She is trying to avoid the shelters & we have tried helping her find a home for about a month. I have two dogs of my own (Boxer & a Corgi mix) so taking them myself isn't an option. Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Lisa
