Could your artificial nails be linked to causing cancer?

Everyone loves the look of healthy nails. Every day as a beautician, I am learning about the health of what we put onto our nail beds to have those longer, shiner, prettier looking nails. For years, I wore acrylics and went through the pain of my bi-weekly appointments of getting my nail beds burned up by a file and the smelly acrylics and primers. Not only did they smell, but they burned and itched as they prepped for that perfect nail.

Did you ever wonder what that could possibly be doing to your health? Did you ever wonder why most nail technicians wear masks during the procedure? What I am about to share with you might come as a shock! Acrylics and primers contain Formaldehyde, which is a toxic carcinogen that is linked to causing cancer amongst nail technicians. We need to be aware of what’s entering into our blood stream.

An alternative is to switch from acrylics to LCN Gel nails. Be careful that you only choose “Gel” and not the other brands that say “Gel Acrylic” next to it. “Gel Acrylics” contain Formaldehyde. Make sure you question the nail technician at the time of your service. An advantage to having Gel versus Acrylic is that the Gel is a lighter substance that feels and looks like your own natural nail. It’s thinner, not as bulky, will not yellow, cause lift, nor will it crack like acrylics. A fill is required every three (3) weeks instead of two (2). That’s a reason in itself to try the switch. Get a new set of healthy nails today and feel better about what you have on your nails tomorrow!

I absolutely cannot wear acrylic nails. Every time I have tried them, my nails ached incredibly. Whenever I would mention this to anyone, they looked at me like I was crazy. My nails would ache for almost two weeks after each application. In fact, the pain would subside just about the time I needed a fill, and then it would start all over with the fill. I also noticed that I didn't feel well---tired, achy, slightly nauseated. I mentioned this to a friend, and she said the same thing happened to her with acyrlic nails. Turns out I'm allergic to acrylic. I found this out when we were doing some remodeling at our home, and I got extremely ill when I was using acrylic caulk. So, it's not just the formaldehyde. Some people are just flat out allergic to the acrylic.

Erin,
I agree with you. While going thru breast cancer chemo treatments, I stayed away from nail salons. My nails looked crappy because of the chemo but now I just let my nails do their natural growth and they look great. Of course it has taken 4 years. In the mean time I wish there had been your new Gel treatment. I would definitely have tried it! Thanks for the great advice as usual. Pete R.
