Michelle Sampson, president of Gimme Shelter and WQ’s pet video host, did a knock-out job of planning the Pets in the City 2 event to benefit her pet adoption program. The Japanese theme gave a fun twist to the event. Geisha girls, Sumo wrestlers, and even a Japanese Palm Reader were part of the fun on hand.

The Oriental theme continued with the cuisine. Horse Feathers did a great job with the food (as they did with our WQ Meet and Eat Lunch) serving sushi, poached salmon and my favorite, sautéed wild mushrooms and sauce over mashed potatoes. For dessert, there were four different kinds of delicious Kawasaki cupcakes baked by Wired Whisk…. yes, I tried them all.

The crowd drew to the ring to watch and laugh as Sumo Wrestlers stumbled and bounced. Party-goers were invited to put on Sumo wrestling costumes and try their stomachs at it, and many did. I thought it would be the perfect opportunity for Kim and I to work out any hidden interoffice hostilities, but she wimped out and refused my invitation to meet in the ring…guess she was scared.

Guests lined up for a read on their future. More than one person was amazed at the precision of the Japanese Palm Reader who was able to foresee the map of the future in one’s hand in spite of being unaccustomed to the noisy environment.

The lack of testosterone at the event is further proof that women’s hearts are more tender than men’s. (Smart guys would have recognized the event as a venue to meet women). Plus, the price was right for wallet-watchers: $25 for food, fun and drink! That’s not your typical Sarasota charity event!

If you missed this entertaining event, it’s still not too late to help the animals. Some of the stories are heart-breaking – like the dog who was rescued from the home where his sibling’s collar was secured to the point of strangulation. Even though times are hard for a lot of people these days, sometimes the tough times are easier when you have an adoring pet to go through life with you. Check out the Pet Video of the Week to see an adorable dog you just might want to give a home.

Sounds like a good event and I love animals. Japanese, caught my eye also. We are working on Sat. at the new Ellenton Farmers market selling Green Tea directly from a 600 year old farm in Japan. It is our friend Izumi's families farm. She is in Japan now for the summer. We may have been able to help on the fundraising side of things.
