Can Our Hair Reveal Breast Cancer?

hair-test.jpg Could hair tests someday provide a viable alternative to mammograms?  An Australian research consortium is exploring the possibility after discovering that hair from women with breast cancer had a different cell structure to hair from women without the disease.

The technology being tested is a…

Is There Love After Hair Loss?

There’s looking for love in all the wrong places, and then there’s looking for (and keeping) love with all the wrong head wear.  Can a bald woman find, or better yet, be the recipient of romantic love?  Therese wants to know, and I suspect there are a whole lot of other women with the same painful question.

Therese developed alopecia after tying the knot with her husband.  Therese initially wore wigs, but found they were not right for her.  She swapped her…

2012 Resolutions for Another Year of Alopecia

2012.jpg Given how much seems to have fit into the year 2011, I’m hoping that 2012 is comparatively insignificant, OR if significant, significant for reasons other than cheating/beating/living with cancer.  If Alopecia is my biggest emotional challenge for the year 2012, then I’ll consider it a fabulous year.  I’m planning ahead for just such a year with my 2012 resolutions.  To…

CHASING CANCER BRINGS HOLIDAY GRATITUDE

The Scoop on Suki Skincare

suki.jpg Skin care products are very personal - naturally, given skin is personal.  When I find something I like, I tend to stick with it.  From time to time, I am asked to try different products and am always willing to do that because I am always looking for natural and safe skin care products to share with women who are undergoing chemotherapy or any woman who simply wants chemical-free and…

Hair Loss the Hard Way

tricho.jpg Hair loss is something that happens to us.  Be it a side effect of chemotherapy, a thyroid disorder, a hormone imbalance, or our immune system’s decision to attack our hair follicles, hair loss happens outside of our control.  What about hair pulling?

I’m talking about trichotillomania (trich for short), an impulse disorder in which affected people develop an…

It’s My Cancer

“You have cancer” Three of the most dreaded words you can hear from your doctor.  Your world has changed and you feel a loss of control.    A moment ago you were a student, parent, wife, maybe even a doctor. Now, suddenly, you are a patient.  In the ensuing panic, disbelief, fear, and confusion you have to make decisions.  Likely right now you think “I can barely breathe, let alone function…how am I to figure all this out?”  Well, unfortunately, your life and your quality of…

Chinese Herbal Medicine in Today’s Cancer Care

Disease (is) not an entity but a fluctuating condition of the patient’s body, a battle between the substance of disease and the natural self-healing tendency of the body.             HIPPOCRATES

CHM is a major aspect of traditional Chinese medicine, which focuses on restoring a balance of energy, body, and spirit to maintain health rather than treating a particular disease or medical condition. Unlike modern medicine, CHM is not symptom based,…

A Positive Attitude and Cancer

There has been much controversy over the need for a positive attitude.  A positive attitude does not mean you have to be upbeat about your cancer or prognosis.  It simply means that if you convince yourself you are going to die, then it could just become a self-fulfilling prophesy, and the reverse…if you convince yourself you will live a long-healthy life, you are on the road to achieve this goal.  I have much confidence in modern medicine, and I sincerely believe it has its place. …

The Redwood Forest

I titled my blog “It’s a Strong Tree that Withstands a Hurricane” as I believe that a strong, healthy body is a formidable defense against cancer, similar to how a strong tree can withstand the fierce winds of a hurricane.  A body that lacks nutrients or that suffers relentless stress is at a disadvantage.  Stress, particularly when perceived as inevitable and uncontrollable, is a key factor in vulnerability to cancer. I will discuss nutrients later, but for now, I want to talk more…

The Illusion of Protrusion

For many women, feeling better about themselves involves cosmetics, hair color, a new dress.  For others, it involves a bit more.  For cancer patients, it takes on a whole different meaning. The last thing a breast cancer survivor wants is to be reminded of the tragic ordeal they’ve been through.  Those who have had to endure a mastectomy, whose nipples are either removed or left asymmetrical or changed, are often saddened by looking down or in the mirror. Beauty may be in the eye of the…
