Dear Coach:
What is insulin resistance? I’ve heard that term from my doctor who is worried because I am 40 pounds overweight and he’s putting me on high blood pressure medication, but he also said if I’m not willing to take off some pounds and control my diet he is concerned about me developing adult onset diabetes. I’m kind of scared. I don’t really know what to do. He says it could be serious.
Worried
Dear Worried.
The hormone insulin…

One of the best educations a child can receive is a classical education. It is the training that the ancient Greeks received, as well as the Italian nobles of the Renaisaance and America's Founding Fathers. A classical education focuses on the three things which were considered to be the reason for and thus the focus of education up until the 1800s: truth, virtue, and beauty. This is in contrast to today's modern education system which focuses on knowledge as a conduit to a profitable…

While doing my end of the year bookkeeping, I happened to notice some extra charges on the Verizon bill for my landline. Listed under Convenient Pay-Per-Use Calling Services, I found charges for Automatic Call Returns, something that has never been utilized on my phone—something that I didn’t even know how to do. The charge was $1.25 per “call return.” On one bill, I was charged for three of these calls, amounting to $3.75 of false charges. Upon further investigation, I found that not only did…

This month’s food and wine festivals began with last night’s Sarasota Food and Wine Festival sponsored by the American Lung Association. Southgate’s Hilllview Street was transformed into a mecca of food and wine. You know I’m a happy girl when I’m faced with a street lined with food from 25 restaurants and caterers and an array of wine to taste from Premier Beverages. I could be seen rushing from table to table in an effort to taste every edible…

I don’t normally watch late night television, but after all the hoopla about NBC replacing Conan O’Brien as the Tonight Show host, I tuned in for his last couple of shows. What I viewed was an example what Relational Life Therapists like myself refer to as "relational living."On Thursday’s show, there was great fun at the expense of NBC. But on Conan’s last night as the Tonight Show host, he became serious. He expressed gratitude for his twenty year…

Colors have a huge impact our psychology, if you are just starting a company or changing your branding be sure to consider color.
By psychology I mean colors affect moods, feelings, memories, thoughts. Your mind is heavily affected by colors. If you want to go in depth colors can be warm or cold. Generally the left side of the spectrum is considered cool and the right is considered warm. You can also have the same basic color in warm or cold versions.
Every color has…

During these intensely changing times, we find many people faced with challenges and crisis much beyond their expectations on a personal and/or business level. Often these situations can seem so overwhelming, it may be difficult to function, leaving one feeling disempowered, out of control, and often burdened with grief.
When crisis shuts someone down, I might reach for a powerful yet underutilized essential oil: Black Spruce (Picea mariana), distilled from the branches of the native,…

In 2008 I thought long and hard about changing
my business name (Frank's Designs) so I met with a marketing guru and he said "No Way!" Keep your name,
YOUare the brand!
This isn't always true for a few companies but if you are a consultant or a sole proprietor it is critical. Even if you have a brand like
Kokokhan "The Essence of Pure Organics you…

What do you think about cloning the DNA from an endangered animal to keep it from going extinct? Dr. Betsy Dresser, senior vice president of research for the
Audubon Nature Institute in New Orleans, is doing just that. She takes the DNA from an endangered animal and uses it with a non-endangered relative. An example is the typical house cat and the African Wildcat.
She takes the egg…

The world is stunned by the devastation and suffering brought about by the earthquake in Haiti. Like most people I know, I very much want to do something, anything, to help Haiti. While the suffering of the Haitian people is beyond heartbreaking, the surge of worldwide support for and solidarity with the Haitian people is so inspiring. My family has been connected to and supporting Haitian orphans for decades, but I now feel compelled to do more, as…

It's all about being fit, feeling strong and leading a healthy, authentic life! What exercise will get you there the fastest?
My personal opinion is the bicep curl that brings the fork to your lips. BUT, if I had to choose only ONE exercise to do the rest of my life? It would be a Squat or a Lunge.
If you’ve spent any time with me personal training or in our Strategic Boot Camp program, you have experienced this exercise in every…

Harmony Health Acupuncture and Herbs
Menopause ... Many women just seem to survive it.
When I run into the usual complaints - the night sweats, foggy thinking, dryness, weight gain, depression and others - I always wish they'd give acupuncture and herbs a try in helping to lighten their load.
Hot flashes is the one uncomfortable condition I hear about most often. A cup of coffee sends one woman…

Whether you are giving it or receiving it, the hard truth is a gift. Most of us have a difficult time both giving and receiving negative feedback. However, when we care about people, one of the greatest gifts we can give them is to lovingly and respectfully tell them those things about themselves that no one else has the nerve to tell them. Conversely, it is a gift to receive that information about ourselves.
Think of all the things you…

Now and again clients will sit in my chair and express concern over white flakes that they’ve seen on their scalp and ask the question...is it dandruff? Dandruff, by definition, usually accompanies an oily scalp. Therefore, the occasional dry scalp that happens as we transition from summer into winter when the heat is turned on, is usually not reason for concern. A thorough ‘pre-shampoo’ brushing with a good boar bristol brush, should do the trick to exfoliate the dry skin that you might be…
