SUPERSIZE NO MORE! PRACTICE PORTION CONTROL

To keep your portions under control, why not use a smaller plate to keep your serving size down.

Then your choices at the table won't be piled up high to tempt you. Also, remember three ounces of meat is about the size of a deck of cards, one ounce of cheese is about four dice, and 1/2 cup of pasta or grain is about 1/2 of a baseball.

Keeping those portion sizes in mind can help you when you're in line at the buffet table.…

"It's a New Moment"

Have you heard anyone say something lately that started like this?

“After the New Year I’ll start…”

For some reason, the later we get in the year the more often this comes up. Although there are a host of other significant dates, vacations and events we organize our lives around; there is just something about December 31 and January 1. I understand we only have a few days left and low-fat eggnog is just not as good as the full-fledged… Continue

EAT YOUR VEGGIES and SATISFY YOUR HORMONES!

Instead of reaching for the sugary treats and cheese and crackers this New Years Eve try loading up on the veggies!

Now it's not as much "fun" as the sugary treats at the table, but if you have one choice to overload your plate with, go with the non-starchy vegetables.

Eat them till you're blue in the face. In fact, I'd love if you'd eat plates and plates full of them.

But, to keep yourself full, start every meal with veggies and you'll give your gut-based… Continue

RECIPE OF THE WEEK: Buffalo Chicken Wing Dip

When Lisa from Backyard Getaway entered this recipe in the holiday recipe contest, I knew Kim was going to love it (even though Patti Linn, her personal trainer in the Weight Loss challenge, might not). Lisa serves this recipe which was passed down from her aunt every New Year. You might want to include it in your festivities this year, too.

Buffalo Chicken Wing Dip

Preheat oven to 350 bake about 10-15min

1 1/2 boxes cream cheese softened

Spread in… Continue

Hair Care Tip of the Week

A Few Ways to Spice Up Your Hair for 2010

Flirt away with bedhead hair.

Few things are sexier than a tousled ‘do that looks like you just took a roll in the hay. The trick to this stylish, unkempt look is to skip the shine-enhancing products. Instead, just spritz wet hair with a thickening lotion, then scrunch hair with fingers while blow-drying. Use a one- to two-inch curling iron to create a few gentle spirals, then instead of brushing, just “massage” hair at the… Continue

My Holiday Weightloss Challenge

Wow - I am happy to report that I did not gain weight during the Thanksgiving-Christmas weeks, I managed to exercise and lose a few pounds! I believe kickstarting the process with Patti's fat shredder meal plan and starting an exercise program before the holidays was key. I actually missed exercising on the days I was unable to find time and instead of mindless emotional eating, I thoughtfully considered my choices. Now I did indulge and would be further toward my goal if I hadn't but I believe… Continue

Social Etiquette Tip of the Week - “To Clink or not Clink”

The holiday season is in full swing and we are closing in on New Year's. As you wait for the clock to strike midnight, a glass of bubbly in hand, do you wonder where the tradition of toasting and clinking glasses came from?

As with many of our food traditions, the clinking of glasses traces its root to the health and safety of the drinker. In this case, it goes back to the tendency of nobles to kill each other off by poisoning their food! One story about the clinking of glasses is… Continue

Odds are good that most people have made many resolutions on many that haven’t been kept. The sincerity is there, certainly, as is the desire, pain and frustration. So what happens?

BLEPHARITIS-What is it and how to treat it

Blepharitis is an overgrowth of dead skin cells and bacteria that is normally found on the skin, and has blocked the eyelash follicle. Blepharitis is a common eye condition, causing the eyelids to be reddened, itchy and somewhat swollen. Overtime, scales become coarser, and crusts form on the lid. The natural lashes become thinner and sparse causing gaps between the natural lashes. Crusts may fall into the eye which feels like a gritty sensation.

SYMPTOMS

RELATIONSHIP TIP OF THE WEEK: Prevent the Invasion of the In-Laws

Time around family over the holidays can sometimes create tension in relationships. If you are one of the unfortunate ones who have in-laws or parents who are critical or non-supportive of your relationship, be sure to put a protective bubble around your relationship this holiday season. By that I mean, make a conscious effort to prevent intrusion in your relationship. Remember that your relationship with your spouse is your primary relationship now. If your parents are saying or doing negative… Continue

Social Etiquette Tip of the Week - “Shopping with Manners - Don’t be THAT Holiday Shopper”

I was shopping in a department store the other day and there were three people in the line. Only one register was open…I'm second of three. Behind me is a woman with an armload of items…I have one!

Another sales clerk arrives on the scene…opens a new register…and says the usual "may I help the next person in line." The woman in front of me, who technically was next in line, starts to move toward that register, but the one behind me, with the armload of stuff, makes it there… Continue
