Cashing Out – Part 4 – Closing the Sale
Why do business sales fall apart? In many cases, the buyer and the seller reach a tentative agreement on the sale of the business, only to have it fall apart. There are reasons this happens, and once understood, many of the worst "deal-crashers" can be avoided.
Understanding is the key word. Both the buyer and the seller must develop an awareness of what the sale involves – such awareness should include facing potential problems…

What does a professional Business Broker and more importantly, a Certified Business Intermediary (C.B.I.)offer?
A professional Business Broker or Certified Business Intermediary (C.B.I.) will take the burden of negative aspects off the seller's shoulders and will know how to handle them more effectively. A lack of professional counsel often leads to disaster. Many times a seller is more concerned about saving attorney's and brokerage fees than surrounding themselves with proper…

Some of the more common mistakes made by sellers in the sale of their businesses are because they do not completely understand what gives value to their company. Most closely-held business owners have purposefully suppressed their profits to reduce tax exposure; therefore the company's financial statements and tax returns do not begin to reflect the true earnings of the business. A professionally trained business broker will prepare documentation from these records reflecting the true cash…

Usually the tough decision to sell a business is based upon any number of reasons, including retirement, personal situations (such as divorce, death, illness, or relocation) or simply a desire to do something different. Here are a few important points to consider if you are ready to put your business up for sale.
CONFIDENTIALITY - Before you make any move, remember confidentiality is generally necessary, and in everyone's best interest, in the transfer of business ownership. A lack of…

Scientists in England have recently discovered a gene that they believe explains why some people, including adolescents, are more prone to becoming overweight or obese. This gene, dubbed “the obesity gene” or the FTO obesity gene affects up to half of all people of European heritage and makes it more of a challenge to lose weight – and avoid obesity. Fortunately, there may be a way to offset the…

The TRUTH is that business brokers help folks obtain "The American Dream" of owning their own business. We do that by listing and marketing existing successful businesses that for whatever reason, the present owner wants and/or needs to sell. We create and define the marketplace.
The TRUTH is that starting up a business is statistically scary, so we sell businesses that have already survived start up and…

Almost eight years ago, it was a serendipitous day both in my relationship and my professional life when the Psychotherapy Networker magazine titled “Bad Couples Therapy: How to Avoid It” arrived at my office. The magazine featured several articles on the subject by renowned therapists, but the one that struck a chord with me so loudly that I couldn’t help but hear it was by best-selling author and ground-breaking therapist Terry Real. I had never heard of him before, but I immediately knew…

Cancer stinks, yep it sure does, hardly makes you want to break into a song and dance routine.
We even avoid mentioning the word, we politely ignore it in much the same way we do when someone has the temerity to fart in the elevator ! (OMG ! did she just write fart, yep, sure did). The stink is there, right under our noses, but what's this ? A sudden mass outbreak of blocked sinuses !
When we finally do gird our loins and stammer out the cancer word, it is in…

Given my own family and personal history, I confess that I often focus on women’s cancers. An email from a customer last year prompted me to take a closer look at children’s cancers and National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. I’ve always been slightly shattered by my conversations with mothers of young girls confronting cancer and in need of a pretty and uplifting head scarf. I am glad that I can offer…
