DIETING HAS GONE TO THE DOGS!

Has one too many lazy winter days left your pooch packing a bit of a paunch? Is your hound looking a little round? Does his belly rival Buddha's (or maybe John Goodman)?

Well, we've always been one to embrace our canine's copious curves, but if your portly pup's more Perez than Paris then your dog may need some weight loss help.

Obesity is on the rise for canines. The reasons are simple: too much food and too little exercise. Just like humans, packing extra pounds can… Continue

What R U Waiting 4?

"What R U Waiting 4 ?", is my question of the day for you.

I have contact with a lot of people on a daily basis and one thing that I have noticed a lot in the conversations taking place are phrases like, " I should...." or " I want to but..." or even " I can't get around to ...".

I thought a lot about it and I must say I do understand that everyone has a lot on their plate, I know I do, but what I don't understand is how we can put our own personal wishes, joys, and… Continue

What’s causing our obesity epidemic?

It’s no secret that the majority of the population is now overweight and the trend is accelerating. The cause of the epidemic is now clear but the association with diabetes means there is a heavy price to pay, in pain and suffering and health care costs of chronic diseases. We are talking about much… Continue

Tasty Recipe for Weight Loss

If you’re like me, you refuse to allow your love of food to be reflected in your weight. Yet there are times when every foodie can’t resist the urge to eat a little too much; the temptations are just too enticing. So over the years, I’ve employed multiple strategies to make sure no one ever looks at me and thinks “Boy, she must love food.” My strategies for ensuring I’m able to continue enjoying the foods I love include sharing courses with dining companions (that way I get to have more taste… Continue

Relationship Tip of the Week: Focus on the Positive

This week, I’m going to begin a series of relationship tips by asking you to do something harder than you think --- to focus on the positive. For one week, each time you open your mouth to say something negative to your partner, close it. There may be lots of negatives in your relationship, and I absolutely want you to address them. But first of all, I invite you to become more aware of the positives in your relationship. Try to find the good things in it and comment on them. You may still… Continue

It's Time for a "Good Ole Girls Club"

It's time for women to step up to the plate, go to bat for and help each other in any way we can. We need to be 'Women Helping Women!"

For decades there has been a "Good Ole Boys Club" and I think we women need to have the same type of ongoing support and assistance among business women. We need to help each other in the business world, and stop undermining the other women. Rather than being critical and deterimental to women in the work force, let's strive to promote, assist, and… Continue

Trends from the Trenches

As a decorator and design consultant it is part of my job to study the trends and keep abreast of what is new in custom home furnishings and I love that part of my work because it allows me to indulge in one of my favorite pastimes - purusing design blogs and magazines. A trend that I am thrilled is making a comeback is the use of wallcovering in interior decor. For years faux finishes have…

Winefest's Gala Dinner: A Foodie's Heaven

If I was a bit disappointed in the food at the Florida Winefest's Showcase Wine and Food Tasting, I couldn't have been more delighted with the delicacies at the Winefest's Gala Dinner and Dance. The night began bayside at the Ritz Carlton with hors d'oeuvres including lamb chops and mini tempura fish sandwiches. That was only the beginning of a night that would gratify any foodie.

Once inside the ballroom, I was delighted to spy a beautiful lobster waiting for me at the table atop a… Continue

Florida Winefest Showcase Food and Wine Tasting

The Florida Winefest Food and Wine Tasting is one of my favorite events of the year, and the profits are donated to worthy children's charities. I always count on the luncheon to serve excellent wines and offer a multitude of delicious bites to eat. The wines predictably included some of the cream of the crop, with some of my personal favorites being Flowers, Chalk Hill and Saddleback. However, the food this year definitely seemed to reflect the state of the economy. Instead of the usual… Continue

Spring has sprung!!

Ahhh...the windows are open and the smell of hibiscus waft through the house. Even in southwest Florida, where most days of the year are balmy and breezy, spring is eagerly awaited. I always look forward to spring, not only for the cool nights and cloudless days, but for the magic in the rebirth of our beautiful world. It is no wonder, then, that springtime is traditionally a time for cleaning out our environments and lightening the look of our homes.

Here are some tips to get you… Continue

Pet Insurance is the BOMB!!!

What if your pet becomes sick or is critically injured and needs care that is expensive and you can't afford?

What can you do?

This is a common problem that Veterinarians face. And trust me, it is not a problem that they enjoy. Veterinarians would rather work on making your pet better, not deal with the financial issues that involve good pet care.

So, what can you do if your pet has a problem that you can't afford? I'll give you some tips.

Big Sugar was Sweeter the Second Time Around

On my first visit to Big Sugar after Pedro Flores, the former chef from The Table, took over as chef, my meal which included pasta with a brown butter sauce was one of the worst meals I've ever attempted to eat in a restaurant. The "sauce" was more like a curdled brown butter soup which was greasy enough to make me be glad I was near the hospital in case I needed a cardiologist. I couldn't believe anyone would let such a flawed and unattractive dish be delivered to a table. I'd eaten multiple… Continue

Why Do So Many Women Have Low Self-Esteem?

This is a question I have pondered many times. Since I teach classes on Self-Esteem and Empowerment, I see women every week who struggle with this issue. Why? What happened to these women to cause them to doubt themselves? These are questions that we can ask over and over and try to determine why, but it may not be possible to make that determination.

So, I suggest that we stop trying to figure out why, and just accept the fact that it is what it is. And, doing that, we can then… Continue

Ingredients Of Intimacy

Most people associate being “intimate” with sex, but true intimacy consists of much more than sex. Intimacy has also been referred to as “into-me see” meaning that in order to be intimate with another person, you must allow them to see who you truly are. Therefore, a prerequisite for intimacy is knowing oneself. Developing a sense of self includes knowing what you like and don’t like, having interests and goals in life that are not determined by someone else, and knowing what you feel. So… Continue

Don't Waste Time With Mr. Wrong

If you're looking for Mr. Right, then don't waste time with Mr. Wrong. If you are a woman who wants to get married or wants a committed relationship, then don't continue to date a man who clearly doesn't have the qualities you want in a life partner. If you have a relationship goal, then stay goal-focused. You wouldn't keep working at a job that wasn't in line with your career goals. Therefore, why would you continue to date a man who clearly isn't husband material?

Too many women… Continue

Sarasota Film Festival Award Winners Announced at Filmmaker's Tribute Event

The shift of the Sarasota Film Festival's Tribute Event from a pricey black-tie gala to an event that was accessible to just about anyone was a commendable metamorphosis. The Sarasota Opera House was the perfect backdrop for the annual awards ceremony. Stanley Tucci told the audience that the festival "is quickly becoming one of our favorita festivals." Presenters included Richard Schiff of West Wing and Steve Buscemi. And the winners are...
