Guilty by association

Are your friends uppers or downers? Do they motivate you to exercise and eat right or would they rather park it and tear open a bag of bonbons? You may not know it, but your friends may be limiting your activity level. If you associate yourself with inactive people, you are more likely going to be inactive. Not to say that your friends are bad people just because they don't exercise or are a little lazy, but be aware of the downers.

Relationship Tip of the Week: Should Shouldn't Exist

This week’s relationship tip is to eliminate the word “should” from your vocabulary. Anytime you use the word “should,” it is trespassing on another person’s territory. When you tell a person what they “should” do, you immediately put yourself in the one up position where you are looking down on the other person.

If I tell a person what they should do, it becomes the “world according to Amy.” I am then in a position to look down on them, and I end up making the other person feel… Continue

I kissed a dog...and I liked it...

The old saying, a dog's mouth is cleaner than a human's, likely comes from the observation that a canine will ceaselessly lick his wounds until they heal—or until a veterinarian fits him with a plastic lampshade. Reflecting on the adage, I instantly remember a relevant fact: a dog's mouth is filthy. Suppose your dog has been eating fecal material, taste testing a dead animal, licking your shoe or simply chewing on a stick that has been decomposing on the ground - your dog could have a slew of… Continue

A GRAND FINALE

The culmination of the Forks and Corks Festival with a Grand Tasting made for a grand finale. The majestic setting of the Ringling Museum courtyard created a beautiful backdrop for this very special tasting event. While the weather did not cooperate with Friday night’s Cirque Culinaire, the sun shone brightly on what may be the best Sunday afternoon of the year. In spite of the heat, 785 food and wine lovers fervently sampled delicacies from the… Continue

Plan for (some) Failure

We all have health and fitness goals. While you dig and claw your way to a slimmer body, healthier heart or finishing your first triathlon- there will be setbacks.

You may miss a workout. You might eat a cheese burger. Maybe you have a work function that will limit your exercise or you might just enjoy one too many beers at the beach. Plan for these minor hiccups. You will only reach your goals if you know how to handle adversity. And believe me,… Continue

Stop the Complaining!

As a Life Coach for mothers I work with a lot of wonderful clients and my ideal clients are mothers who are "ready" to empower themselves and create positive changes in their lives. These women are ready to live their dreams, walk the talk, take responsibility for their actions and lives and achieve the goals they are setting for themselves.

One thing my ideal clients don't do is complain!

They don't complain about their marriage, they work on it and invest in it.

They don't… Continue

Why Do Women Stay in Relationships With Abusive Men?

This question is one that has been asked many times. Why would a women stay with a man who treats her poorly? Some women stay with a man who is abusive--physically, verbally or emotionally. Why would they do that?

I think I can answer that question with a very short phrase - "LOW SELF-ESTEEM" Often the women accept and put up with being treated badly because they don't believe they deserve anything better. They feel they don't really deserve respect and don't demand it.

A PERFECT BLEND at THE BIJOU CAFE

The Bijou Café was the perfect home for the Forks and Corks Festival Wine Dinner hosted by Allen Meadows. Jean-Pierre Knaggs, owner of the Bijou Café, referred to Meadows as “the world’s most renowned writer of all things Burgundy.” Meadows is the pioneer of burghound.com, an online wine journal initially devoted solely to the wines of Burgundy. The journal is read in 54 countries and was the first of its kind to focus on only one wine. Burghound is now also inclusive of Pinot Noir and… Continue

FORKS AND CORKS UNIVERSITY: CLASSES YOU SHOULDN'T SKIP

As soon as I arrived, I knew I made a mistake by skipping the Forks and Corks University’s first classes. Everyone I spoke with exclaimed enthusiasm for both Anthony Bell’s Blending Class and Allen Meadows Burghound Insights.

Fortunately, I didn’t miss out on the tasting luncheon. The ever-smiling Sun House Restaurant chef, Darrell Mizell served a lightly blackened South American Red Snapper with a roasted vegetable rice pilaf laced with his very own homemade chorizo, topped with a… Continue

A Tasty "Taste of Argentina"

If last night’s winemaker dinner at the Polo Grill is any indication of the weekend to come at the Forks and Corks Food and Wine Festival, then this is going to be a delightful and delicious week-end. I hit the jackpot with this dinner with not one, but three winemakers pouring their wines straight from Argentina and Italy. Chef David Vogell’s four course Taste of Argentina dinner paired perfectly with the wines of Familia Zuccardi. Familia… Continue

Forget the Shrink and Pharmaceuticals...I'll take some Pet Therapy!

There are many terms used to describe ways in which animals can help rehabilitate and heal people with special needs. These include 'pet therapy,' 'pet facilitated therapy,' or 'animal-assisted therapy.' Pets can help people with a variety of mental, emotional, and physical disabilities. Fish, birds, pocket pets, rabbits, cats, dogs, and horses have all been employed in pet therapy.

What qualities do companion animals have that make them so therapeutic?

Shopping 101: What to Do When You Only Have a Small Budget

Making Dinner or Making Whoopee

The guy you've recently begun dating asks you over for dinner. Face it, what he really wants to make is not dinner; it's whoopee! It's the oldest trick in The Lazy Man's Guide to Seduction. He doesn't have to lure you. You're already there, steps away from his bedroom. And if you reject him, he doesn't even have to bother to spend any more time with you. You've got your own car so you can drive yourself home. But he's counting on the odds that you'll feel obligated to oblige after he… Continue

Relationship Tip of the Week: Lead with "I"

You may have heard this one before, but it bears repeating. When you have something to say, speak from the "I." Instead of leading sentences with "You..." begin with "I...." Your partner (or anyone you communicate with) is much more likely to be able to hear your message. People tend to get defensive as soon as they hear "You..." Consider this example. If you were the listener, would you be more likely to respond positively to "You never listen to me. You always interrupt me" or "I don't feel… Continue
