Chances are you have friends or family dealing with Alzheimer’s Disease. If so, you’re familiar with the striking loss of memory, body function and emotional challenges that accompany it.
Depression and anxiety are common. But don’t let frustration and/or lack of information from injecting a note of optimism in this gloomy scenario.
Acupuncture can…

May not still be together. I went "birding" with the Audubon Society over the holidays. I have a new appreciation for people who do this. It's a real challenge! What they find, or don't find, has a real impact on humans.

On a recent trip to Europe, I spent a week in Slovenia, studying with my former teacher, Zdenko Domancic.
Most Americans have never heard of him, despite his overwhelming popularity in Europe and elsewhere.
He is one of the most successful healers of our time. According to a documentary about him called, “Think About It,” he has healed more than a million people.
Whether it is directly, or indirectly, it is still a huge amount of people.
On July 13,…

What is Wellness Coaching?
The coach - a carriage or comfortable wagon, originated in the town of Kocs (pronounced: Coch) in Hungary where it was known as the "Kocsi szeker" or "wagon of Kocs." It was a significant improvement over existing wagons and its name recalls the town of its origins. Practically all western languages borrowed the Hungarian town's name to describe this new type of vehicle: coach. A coach will take you comfortably from point A to point B.
Coaching,…

Most of the time when we make resolutions for the New Year, our resolutions tend to be self-centered. Resolutions such as losing weight or stopping smoking are generally about you and you alone. This year, as you make your New Year’s resolutions, expand your pledges to include actions that will impact your relationship. Perhaps you need to stop yelling or complaining, be more accountable for your mistakes or spend more time simply having fun together. As an incentive, remember that your efforts…

Many people – men and women alike – walk around with chronic shoulder pain. They feel stiff. Picking up the simplest objects - from boxes and bikes to children and grocery bags - becomes a challenge. But they adapt and trudge on the best they can.
It doesn’t have to be that way, however. Chinese Medicine has a big bag of tools available to treat underperforming rotator cuffs…

Happy New Year! In my last blog on WQ
we talked about a fictitious person, “Jane,” who was struggling with the conflict between her desire to lose weight and get healthier and her immediate cravings and urges to eat whatever she wants. As a result we said that Jane had been struggling with 30 to 40 pounds for years. She had been on many diets and she was now trying to keep her New Year’s resolution to…

Do you start getting hunger pangs at 11:50 a.m in anticipation of lunch? We've all been there.
The cause is the hormone ghrelin; released when the stomach is empty, it sets off a chain reaction in the body to make you hungry. In general, you want to keep levels of ghrelin low during the day so you can keep hunger in check. Apart from an empty stomach, there are several factors that can raise ghrelin levels, including drinking alcohol, eating too few calories, and eating greasy, fatty…

When you get paid take a moment to appreciate the income. Being thankful for something will lead more income.
Start the day off with your first priority (even if it is something you would rather avoid, if you get it done first the rest of the day will be easier because what you dread won't be hanging over your head.
Smile while you are answering the phone.
Imagine new prospects contacting you or walking into your business.
Imagine your bank account being more and more…

During the summers of 2002 and 2003 I had the great fortune of living and working in East Hampton, NY. During that time I taught pilates and cross training with the famed Bob Harper of the Biggest Loser at Summer Kicks in East Hampton, NY. He was a blast to work with and a very cool guy! See the website below which feature Summer Kicks "Celebrity Instructors" past and current.…

To keep your portions under control, why not use a smaller plate to keep your serving size down.
Then your choices at the table won't be piled up high to tempt you. Also, remember three ounces of meat is about the size of a deck of cards, one ounce of cheese is about four dice, and 1/2 cup of pasta or grain is about 1/2 of a baseball.
Keeping those portion sizes in mind can help you when you're in line at the buffet table.…

Have you heard anyone say something lately that started like this?
“After the New Year I’ll start…”
For some reason, the later we get in the year the more often this comes up. Although there are a host of other significant dates, vacations and events we organize our lives around; there is just something about December 31 and January 1. I understand we only have a few days left and low-fat eggnog is just not as good as the full-fledged…

Instead of reaching for the sugary treats and cheese and crackers this New Years Eve try loading up on the veggies!
Now it's not as much "fun" as the sugary treats at the table, but if you have one choice to overload your plate with, go with the non-starchy vegetables.
Eat them till you're blue in the face. In fact, I'd love if you'd eat plates and plates full of them.
But, to keep yourself full, start every meal with veggies and you'll give your gut-based…

When Lisa from Backyard Getaway entered this recipe in the holiday recipe contest, I knew Kim was going to love it (even though Patti Linn, her personal trainer in the Weight Loss challenge, might not). Lisa serves this recipe which was passed down from her aunt every New Year. You might want to include it in your festivities this year, too.
Buffalo Chicken Wing Dip
Preheat oven to 350 bake about 10-15min
1 1/2 boxes cream cheese softened
Spread in…

A Few Ways to Spice Up Your Hair for 2010
Flirt away with bedhead hair.
Few things are sexier than a tousled ‘do that looks like you just took a roll in the hay. The trick to this stylish, unkempt look is to skip the shine-enhancing products. Instead, just spritz wet hair with a thickening lotion, then scrunch hair with fingers while blow-drying. Use a one- to two-inch curling iron to create a few gentle spirals, then instead of brushing, just “massage” hair at the…

Wow - I am happy to report that I did not gain weight during the Thanksgiving-Christmas weeks, I managed to exercise and lose a few pounds! I believe kickstarting the process with Patti's fat shredder meal plan and starting an exercise program before the holidays was key. I actually missed exercising on the days I was unable to find time and instead of mindless emotional eating, I thoughtfully considered my choices. Now I did indulge and would be further toward my goal if I hadn't but I believe…

The holiday season is in full swing and we are closing in on New Year's. As you wait for the clock to strike midnight, a glass of bubbly in hand, do you wonder where the tradition of toasting and clinking glasses came from?
As with many of our food traditions, the clinking of glasses traces its root to the health and safety of the drinker. In this case, it goes back to the tendency of nobles to kill each other off by poisoning their food! One story about the clinking of glasses is…
