Earth Day just passed us by. Or did it?
We are all aware that companies have been out to prove how green they are. Now it's your turn (the consumer).
Research studies have shown that advertisements do better when they emphasize how the customer can be more green by using their product. Ads that show how you can make a difference using their product in a different way also help. This is actually good news. Because if we don't take on responsibility as individuals it will…

An interesting article came out today that I found very interesting because I noticed these things when the "revamped" brands came out.
Most important, if you already have a strong brand don't change it! You can enhance your brand by emphasizing company values, vision, and with marketing campaigns that reinforce the brand. A brand is your whole identity, not just your logo. It is the name, the logo, the design feature, for example: colors, fonts,…

Some say connecting with the customer is most important, others say it is perceived value and others say it is how eco friendly your product and or business is. It isn't any of them and it is all of them (depending on your niche). Let's look at some examples.
Here is an example of how a company missed their target: people who love music and are comfortable with tech…

As a web designer I often have a reason transfer a URL (website address) to my account or to an account set up in the client's name. Sometimes (Far too often) we run into a problem. The client doesn't have the website in their name! Unfortunately if you didn't buy your URL yourself some webmasters will leave the URL in their name instead of in yours. So if you want to transfer the Domain they get all correspondence and if they don't respond to it you are stuck and don't really have control over…

For the past decade more and more people have been either employing themselves or starting small businesses with a small number of employees.
I keep meeting people that say they do everything or this that and the other thing almost all all unrelated. That is the opposite of a niche. So what do you do if you want to do it all? As an example we'll use someone who
- Option 1: Create separate businesses for each niche (dog sitting, home watch, and taxi service…

Value Matters: Sales and Discounts used to work very well. Consumers thought "it's on sale! I'm saving $20!". Consumers are smarter now. A sale doesn't really count unless it is something they need, in other words there is no
value if they don't need it. They realize that if they are buying something that they normally WOULD NOT then they DO NOT need to buy it
even if it is on sale.
Here are some ideas of how you can increase someone's (real or)…

Search Engine Optimization has become an area where we all need to know more about what is being offered to us. I would argue that most companies need to do search optimization up front or one time than to pay for month to month optimization. If someone is searching for a massage therapist for example the are most likely going to type "massage therapist" or "[city you are in] massage therapist".
So who needs it? If you are in a competitive industry then you…

recently saw an article called "
Strong New Vehicles behind Ford Success". The truth is more like... Ford's quality improvements, perseverance, and [years of] social networking is behind Ford's Success. Ford has been working very hard for many years improving its vehicles and pushing that information out there so we know about it. Ford has taken social media by the horns and used it…

Razor Wars...
This is a bit of a rant, please forgive me.
Just because you have a new product doesn't mean that your target market is stupid! Show respect to your clients by pricing your products within reason or your clients will start noticing and realize that the value is less than the price.
Did you know that razor blades for currently available razor blade handles are between $2 and $4 each! Ridiculous right!? Schick and Gillette are trying to outdo each…

What are the very best ways to get clients?

Taglines matter. You can get by without one (especially if your brand name is super clear like WQ Magazine advertiser "
Handbag Heaven"). BUT if you are business name isn't that memorable or doesn't have a powerful inherent meaning a great tagline is a must. As a graphic and web designer I often work with new businesses who struggle with coming up with a great tagline. I know I struggled with coming up with mine: "Empowered Marketing" You can learn…

Colors have a huge impact our psychology, if you are just starting a company or changing your branding be sure to consider color.
By psychology I mean colors affect moods, feelings, memories, thoughts. Your mind is heavily affected by colors. If you want to go in depth colors can be warm or cold. Generally the left side of the spectrum is considered cool and the right is considered warm. You can also have the same basic color in warm or cold versions.
Every color has…

In 2008 I thought long and hard about changing
my business name (Frank's Designs) so I met with a marketing guru and he said "No Way!" Keep your name,
YOUare the brand!
This isn't always true for a few companies but if you are a consultant or a sole proprietor it is critical. Even if you have a brand like
Kokokhan "The Essence of Pure Organics you…

I just saw an image I created did on a blog of a person who doesn't have the right to use it. My client who paid for it and I were a little bit irritated.
So, the next time someone says "Just get an image off the web" think twice. Some images are OK to use. Even pages that don't specifically say "copyright" or use the copyright symbol are likely to have content that is copyrighted. Artwork has copyright protection upon creation of the artwork. Graphics and logs are artwork. Using…

Many people are realizing that tightening everything up in 2009 didn't help. It is time to make a change. If you aren't working on your business then your business will stop working for you.
"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. "
-Benjamin Franklin
So, what can you do differently?
1)
Learn from others, call a similar business in a different market (another city? state?) and…

When you get paid take a moment to appreciate the income. Being thankful for something will lead more income.
Start the day off with your first priority (even if it is something you would rather avoid, if you get it done first the rest of the day will be easier because what you dread won't be hanging over your head.
Smile while you are answering the phone.
Imagine new prospects contacting you or walking into your business.
Imagine your bank account being more and more…
